Leonardo Capalbo Steps in as Don José in Carmen at Oviedo Opera

Opera de Oviedo has announced that internationally acclaimed tenor Leonardo Capalbo will take over the role of Don José in upcoming performances of Bizet’s Carmen, stepping in on short notice.

Capalbo brings considerable experience to one of opera’s most demanding tenor roles. He has previously sung Don José at major international houses and festivals, including the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Norwegian National Opera, Polish National Opera, The Grange Festival, Greek National Opera, and Palm Beach Opera, where his portrayal has been praised for its vocal authority and dramatic intensity.

Capalbo, widely recognized for his dramatic intensity and vocal command, joins the production at a critical moment, bringing both experience and artistry to one of opera’s most demanding tenor roles. His assumption of Don José underscores Oviedo Opera’s commitment to maintaining the highest artistic standards for its audiences.

Known for performances across major European and international stages, Capalbo is particularly celebrated for his interpretations of the core Italian and French tenor repertoire. His portrayal of Don José—requiring both lyrical nuance and dramatic power—has been praised for its emotional depth and theatrical conviction.

Capalbo will perform January 30, February 1, 4 & 7 in a production by Emilio Sagi, conducted by Rubén Díez
