Leonardo Capalbo’s performance as Essex was widely praised by audiences and critics. Operawire proclaimed Capalbo a “star in the making” noting “his voice displayed a strong sense of security and clarity.” Platea Magazine called him “extremely convincing, striking in his performance, and vocally polished.” Backtrack praised his “solid tone and flaming phrasing.”

The Teatro Real took home the same prize last year for Deborah Warner’s production of Britten’s Billy Budd.

The winners will be announced on April 29th, 2019 in London.
