Leonardo Capalbo begins the 2019-2020 season with a new production of Don Carlos at Opera Vlaanderen. Conducted by incoming music director Alejo Pérez, the production by Johan Simons also features Mary Elizabeth Williams, Andreas Bauer Kanabas, Kartal Karagedik, and Raehann Bryce-Davis. This marks Capalbo’s debut with the company and his first appearance in the role in French after debuting the part in Italian at Grange Park Opera earlier this year.

Capalbo earned universal praise for his debut as Don Carlo. The Stage called him “passionate and richly coloured.” Bachtrack noted “Capalbo [sang] with warmth to add to that strength and to his smooth phrasing” while Seen and Heard called him “supremely at ease, vocally and dramatically.”

Opera Vlaanderen has drawn increased attention from the opera world in recent years for its daring stagings, varied repertoire, and superb musical output. In 2019 the theatre won Best Opera Company at the International Opera Awards.

Performances of Don Carlos begin September 19 and run through October 30 in Antwerp and Ghent.
